Representatives of the "IRELI" Public Union invited Ambassador Marc Grossman (details are indicated below) for an Iftar meal on the second day of the holy month of Ramadan. Having accepted the invitation, Amb. Grossman joined the "IRELI" representatives at the “Kohne Sheher” (Old City) restaurant of Baku.
Present at the function were Jeyhun Osmanli, the "IRELI" chairman, Ramiz Mammadli, a member of the organization’s Steering Board and graduate of the US East Tennessee University Ramiz Mammadli, Harvard University graduate Emin Huseynov, John Hopkins University student Leyla Mammadli, LSE undergraduate Ayshan Karimova, and Ismayil Isayev, German Liepsig University undergraduate and IRELI’s secretary in charge of Projects and Programs.
Also joining the Iftar meal were "IRELI" co-founders Roya Talybova and Farhad Mammadov.
During the meeting, which proceeded in the conditions of warm fellowship, the ambassador answered young people’s numerous questions, and an interesting disscusion took place about the future of Azerbaijan, the region and the entire world.

Ambassador Grossman, who hails from Los Angeles, California, graduated from the California University in Santa Barbara. He received a Master’s Degree in international relations at the London School of Economics and International Relations (LSE). Grossman served as deputy head of NATO Secretary-General Lord Carrington’s team in 1983-1986 and worked at the US embassy in Pakistan in 1977-1979. Later, in 1993-1994, he served as special envoy for the US Secretary of State. In 1989-1992, Grossman served as the adviser to the US Ambassador to Turkey. In 1994-1997, Grossman was appointed the US Ambassador to Turkey, and, while acting in this capacity, he worked to further US-Turkish cooperation in the areas of security, human rights, democracy, and economic cooperation. On his initiative and with his organizational support, NATO’s 50th anniversary summit was held in Washington in 1999. It was at that time that he played a role in the alliance’s military campaign in Kosovo. While acting as US Assistant Secretary of State for European Affairs in 1997-2000, he was responsible for the work of over 4,000 US diplomats based in 50 diplomatic missions.
In 2000-2001, Grossman headed the US State Department’s foreign service and human resources department. In 2001, he was appointed US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs. In 2005, Amb. Grossman wrapped up his 29-year tenure at the US State Department. Following the September 11, 2001 developments, Mr. Grossman’s role was instrumental in the global combat against terror and in providing diplomatic support for military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq as well as in holding confidential military-political talks.
Owing to indispensable efforts in serving his country, Amb. Grossman has been conferred with a plethora of awards and titles. In 2004, Mr. Grossman was awarded by the US President the “Career Diplomat” rank, the top US state service rank which is tantamount to the rank of general in the US military. In 2005, Mr. Grossman was conferred with the Outstanding State Servant Award by the US Secretary of State.
Mr. Grossman is a member of the boards of regents and administration at a number of US non-governmental organizations and educational institutions.
Along with acting as Vice-President of the Cohen Group organization, named after and run by the former US Defense Secretary William Cohen, he is also a professor at the Georgetown University.
